If you see a firefighter in the streets today (Friday, Dec. 6) holding up an issue of The Review, dig deep into your pocket.

This Friday is the annual Hamtramck Goodfellows paper drive. The Goodfellows need to raise at least $3,000 to $5,000 in order to supply food vouchers to about 250 needy individuals and families.

“We want every kid to have a Christmas dinner,” said Chris Cornwell, Co-Chair of the Hamtramck Goodfellows.

Although it’s been said that the nation has begun to recover from the so-called Great Recession that occurred a few years ago, in Hamtramck that bounce back is still waiting to happen.

Over the past 10 years the Goodfellows have been able to build a cash reserve, but with the need still out there and the donations not as plentiful, it’s been hard.

“For the past three years we have had to tap into our reserve,” Cornwell said.

Applications for a food voucher, which can be redeemed at A&C Market on Jos. Campau and Jacob, are available at city hall, the fire station and the public housing administration office.

Individuals and families are invited to apply for the vouchers. The value of the vouchers depends on the need of each family.

To make a donation, make out a check to the Hamtramck Goodfellows and mail it to: Hamtramck Treasury Office, 3401 Evaline, Hamtramck, MI 48212.
