Left hand, meet the right hand.
In Hamtramck, the city administration learned something new recently from one of its key service providers. At a recent city council work session, the city’s sanitation contractor, Green For Life (GFL) Environmental USA, Inc., said it had not been billing the city to replace lost garbage cans for at least the past year, or so.
That seemed to blindside the city administration. The Public Works Department has been billing residents $100 for a can.
The matter came up in causal discussion about extending the contract with the company. The city council later approved the two-year extension.
But it was decided that those who purchased the last 200 cans the city charged for will now get a reimbursement. However, it’s up to residents and homeowners who bought one to go to city hall and ask for a refund.
The city will research each request to see if the purchase in question was made for any of the last 200 cans issued.
And for now on, the city will no longer charge for a can – at least as long as Green For Life continues to offer them for no charge.
