Summer is quickly coming to a close, and there is no better way to celebrate our last few weeks of warm weather than by attending next weekend’s annual Hamtramck Labor Day Festival. The weekend offers a variety of activities, including a “canoe” race on Monday at noon.

In just one week Hamtramck will be party center for the Detroit area.
That is, of course, if you like a party with good food, local art, local music and one of the best parades – if not the best – in the area.
This all happens next weekend (Sept. 2-4) – yes, next weekend. That’s when the 38th Hamtramck Labor Day Festival will take place.
For those of you who hooked up those many years ago and started a family, yes, your “kid” would be approaching middle age. That’s a joke, folks. Because that never, ever happens.
This year offers a brand new spanking addition: Helicopter rides.
Yes, indeed, you can enjoy a five-minute ride for a mere $20. The rides start on Jos. Campau near Carpenter and you will get to fly over the festival ground and back.
“You’ll get a bird’s eye view,” said festival co-chairman Shannon Lowell.
Also included in the holiday weekend is the annual Polish Day Parade, on Labor Day, Sept. 4, starting at 1:30 p.m.
Over the weekend about 80,000 visitors are expected to attend. The festival is free to attend, but you’re on your own in finding parking. The festival runs noon to 10 p.m. each day.
