Enough with rogue towing companies operating in Hamtramck.
Now that there has been the appearance of another predatory towing company operating in town, city officials and the police department need to take an immediate look in regulating this industry.
Councilmember Ian Perrotta is introducing proposed legislation to rein in towing companies and how they can conduct business in Hamtramck.
(Editor’s note: Perrotta is the copy editor here at The Review.)
There is also a state law regulating towing services. Companies should not be allowed to hover around privately-owned lots to tow away unsuspecting car owners.
It should be that a tow company can only tow a car when the lot owner requests it.
Companies should also need to provide written proof of the owner’s request to the police department before a car is towed.
Incidents of aggressive-predatory towing practices are widespread in Detroit. This is an industry that is out of control.
Hamtramck can be the first community to protect car owners and set an example for other cities.
